Virtual host vs. .htaccess

The environment is shared Linux box, managed with cPanel, which means access to /home/userxyz and from there down to /home/userxyz/public_html, which is the Apache-pointed root directory for the web site.

In my first installation, I pointed the installer to /home/userxyz/public_html. That created the ezpublish directory INSIDE my web directory, and created very long URL's. Didn't like it, so...

I deleted the first installation, and then I reinstalled the product, this time pointing OUTSIDE of my web directory (that is, the ezpublish directory was in home/userxyz, at the same level as public_html). Then, I moved all files from inside the ezpublish directory to /home/userxyz/public_html.

Now, the URL's are shorter, and the site starts by just pointing to http://www.userxyz.com. The site seems to work perfectly, and so far so good... But...

During the second installation, I DID NOT get from the installation script the recommendation that I got in the first one, asking me to copy and rename the .htaccess file. FURTHER YET, the installation script did not produce an htaccess file in the first place!

So, here comes my question(s):
* Because I installed straight into the root web directory (/home/userxyz/public_html), does that mean that I have installed the product as virtual host? In that case, does that mean I don't need an .htaccess? Or...
* I still need the .htaccess file, and need to reconstruct it from zero because somehow installing ezPublish outside of .../public_html confused the installation script?

Any advice will be, as usually, very welcome

Thanks
