3.1beta1: subtree subscription datatype

I understand this is to be used with notification?

If so, how can we use it (could not find a related template other than edit/view).

Isn't it redundant with respect to a general subscribe/notifcation functionality coupled to the node (sub)tree or even the boolean datatype (when you intend it as a switch in templates to call the global notification) ?
