Ok, it looks quite nice.
Haven't yet had the chance to benchmark the compiling of the templates but all in all I like it. I of course understand that it is an early beta but I suppose you guys might like some feedback:

I seriously don't see the point about the template editor if there's not even a way to edit the templates in a simple textbox. I can see why you guys don't want WYSIWYG but just copying around templates (which doesn't exactly seem to work, either) is of little to no use to most of us.

Furthermore, it's nice that it shows the admin templates etc but I would have wished that there was a somewhat saner layout for it. Make it two pages, one with templates that affect users (i.e. the site) and one (with big warning) for the backend. Most people probably dont want to change the backend so why should they be bothered by even seeing pages and pages of admin templates?

Personally, I love the idea of a template editor but in its current form, it's useless.

The point of the new template system was not to create an editor but to have a new and flexible override system and to allow better names of override templates (folder.tpl for instance).
The editor was added to allow simplistic editing, for instance to make a copy of the original template and then remove some elements.

Besides the template editor is useful for allowing people who do not have login access to the server to edit the templates. for instance to do some final adjustments.

If it's of no use to you don't use it.

Don't get me wrong, it would be of much use to me if the editor actually worked. On my machine, it won't even copy, much less edit templates. If I click on new, assign a name to the template and either copy or start from scratch I get back to the page listing the current templates but not my new one.

I'm guessing you don't have write permission for the Apache process on design/*/override/templates, try adding it and see if it works.

Actually, I chowned the whole tree to be writeable by Apache/PHP, no luck.
