is the usage of repositories limited to installations where the "var" directory is named "var"?

my provider has a security policy that does not allow this naming, therefore i am trying to change the name of the directory to "vvvar", but i am having problems with uploading and finding repository packages then.

here is what i do: install a simple system. after the installation process i rename the directory with the FTP client and change all references in .ini files.

then i use FTP to remove cache files - if there are any, and log in.

after the log-in the CSS of the gallery site (just one choice during installation) is not showing, nor are photos and images. however, newly uploaded images are showing.

uploading repository packages does not work, nor do packages installed during install show up.
i am running with debug turned on, but there are no error messages.

(php 4.4.2, mysql 4.1.x)

any ideas? cheers!

[FileSettings]
# The root directory where all log files, cache files
# and other stored files are created.
VarDir=vvvar

If this doesn`t work move to another provider
