problem with edit gui for ezdate

I have a class that has a date attribute. On my user site I made a custom template for editing this class. Depending on some parameters this template sometimes displays the edit gui for the date attribute, and sometimes doesn't.
When the gui is displayed, everything works ok, the date is set to the value selected by the user.

But when the gui isn't displayed (and therefore there are no POST variables for this attribute), the date attribute is set to empty value. I think that this is wrong behaviour and that the date attribute should be unchanged when there's no edit gui for it.

For example, the XML field and text line attributes work like that. They don't change when there's no gui displayed.

Is this a bug, or this is made on purpose? Why the behaviour is different for the date attribute?

P.S. I didn't check for other attribute types, but I think that it happens also with checkbox attributes.
