Problem changing passwords

In my version of ezPublish (3.1-1 SVN2703), I can change a password to blank/null (i.e. I type in the old password and leave the new password/confirm password fields blank). The problem here is that is it now impossible to use the account. You cannot log in or change the password to something else. I realise than an obvious solution is not to change the password to an empty string, but this is the sort of thing that users tend to do from time to time. Any workarounds/fixes here would be appreciated.
