If you start with the default flat_left.tpl and customize that (in your override folder of course), you could do this as a tree menu pretty easily. That would mean that only the subtree would only show when you are in the parent. i.e. if you are viewing Front Page of Section 1, the folder 4,5, and 6 would not show under Front page of Section 6.
