Homepage with 2 columns

How good would it be to modify the article class with two select boxes (show frontpage column 1 / show frontpage column 2) and then filter by attributes the articles to show in every column of the template? Perhaps other option would to create a section, but I don't really see how really sections work... (I have to learn a lot about ez publish and the templates...because I feel to lost...) Then you need to assign template to that class and check if column has content ( http://ez.no/community/forum/general/check_if_attribute_has_content_or_not ) then display it.
