Easily edit custom tags with attributes in the Online Ed?

Our site will be using quotes extensively, and I wish to create a custom quote tag that allows for consistent styling. <i>heading</i> and <i>citation</i> would be attributes for this tag.

The problem is editing in the Online Editor. Adding attributes manually is completely nonintuitive and quite error-prone. Is there any way to approach this in a more user-friendly manner? If not, I'd rather risk inconsistent styling. Perhaps there is a better way than using attributes?

The ideal solution would be to be able to edit the fields directly in the main window of the Online Editor. For instance, my quote tag could be represented by a table with three fields (or six if they have labels). Users would just type and OE would place the content in the appropriate attributes or inside the tag. But I realize this might be impossible without a great deal of coding in the Online Editor.

A simpler solution (and <i>almost</i> user-friendly) would be to let the Online Editor automatically add required attributes in the Insert custom tag dialog box. This might be an acceptable solution, though still kludgy. I have looked at it, but it's difficult since I don't know JavaScript.
