Translation without linguist?

I translated eZ publish 3 in my language, Italian (then I will distribute it), without using the linguist, because I don't like using them. I simply created the files share/locale/ita-IT.ini and share/translations/ita-IT/translation.ts. Then I modified settings/site.ini, but there was no change. Am I obliged to use QT toolkit? If not, what else can I do to get the translation work?

The translation can be done with using Linguist, however you must make sure that the text you enter are in UTF8 encoding. This means that characters outside of the normal 7bit ASCII must be encoded. When using Linguist you don't have to worry about this.
The text will still work but some characters may be missing.

What did you put site.ini?
Did you get some warnings?
