Problem with images?

<scenario 1>
If I do a windows install (using the windows installer) and then create a gallery site thru the browser installer and then upload the whole mess to my shared linux server (changing the database settings after the upload). I can generally see some of the sample images (not all).

After uploading to my linux site, if I then add a new image I will <b>not</b> see the image rendered in either the admin tool or the site itself. When I view a page where I should see the image the src attribute of the img tag is blank..

</scenario 1>

<scenario 2>

If I do a windows install (using the windows installer), upload the install to my linux server and then create a gallery site on the <b>linux</b> server with the browser installer, all is well.

</scenario 2>

I have compared most of the ini files from these two scenarios and they compare equal.

Does anyone know why my first scenario does not show the images?

Thx,

gr

ps: throwing in an unrelated question:

when installing on my linux shared server (running the browser wizard), ez pub creates the var/log directory with an owner of apache and write protects the directory ... so I need to get a sysadmin to delete it. Is there any way to turn of this write protection via config options?

thx
