Hi, am building a community portal and am debating Ez versus Joomla.

Ez seems to have the edge in almost all areas BUT does not appear to support PHP 5. This a major headache as the 4 sites that I am looking to migrate are all hosted on hosting sites with PHP 5!

Two questions: -

Does Ez work with PHP (at all)?

Any plans to bring Ez upto date with a PHP 5 version?

Cheers...

eZ Publish does not support PHP5 at the moment. Support is more than definitely planned, and the first steps have alrready been taken : the eZ PHP Components (http://ez.no/products/ez_components). We're gradually porting the reusable features of eZ Publish 4 (Database abstraction, HTTP layer, Template engine, Input filtering...) to an opensource components library framework written specifically for PHP 5 with pure OO programming in mind.

For that reason, eZ Publish 3 will never support PHP 5, since the changes required for that are really heavy and would only produce an adapted version without taking advantage of PHP 5 itself.

You can see our detailled roadmap here :http://ez.no/community/developer/roadmap.

Many thanks for the prompt reply.

Not sure it helps as I need to create the websites now - not 2007. I guess I can look into changing hosts but...

Ez look the better bet, so it's time for some serious thinking!

It was a tough call we have to admit, but most "shared" web servers are still runing PHP4, and eZ publish is more suitable for decicated servers, and on those you're supposed to be able to use any flavour of PHP... good luck ;)

i have been testing EZ on several host around, without luck, after the 4.4.x php and up, and the ez.3.5.

The results is that I move the sites to a dedicated hosting for ez, such as webdeal.no, for to secure the optimal performace and so on.

on my personal web, that I do not intend to use to much money on, I run the 3.7.0 and my host upgraded the server to a php 4.4.x and the mySQL version for something 5ish. (cant recal, to lazy to look it up from my sofa)

What was a working installation ended up not working. before I was able to setup several installations on my host (in folders ) etc, for testing an so, but now, I cant even use my databases, as the ezsetup say they are wrong character set, but in fact they are not.

But sudden, without a know (for me) reason, my one installation start work again, I guess it was some php setting the host dude did yes. But I am still not able to set up any new ...

It seams the reason is between the ez and database because of the php version and sql version. But I really do not know what. A colleauge suggested to unzip the package (read in the forum) with zip and not the rar program, but that didnt solve the problem.

So what I wonder is what the specific details the ez have to be run at today. meanwhile I just use my one and only workiing 3.7.0 setup to work on.. and maybe my host one day change some more and it will work?

I have 3.7.3 to 3.7.5 workin on MySQL 5.0.18 without any issues.

So it's likely really either a permission problem or something about the way PHP is configured on your webhost.
