I encountered some php-segfaults when using xcache for php-cli scripts like cronjobs using the same setup (ubuntu 8.04 lts, php5, ...). According to other posts you made i think you are using php as fastcgi-daemon and not as apache-module 8as is do). That's causing some other segfaults in your setup for web-output-scripts too - not only php-cli. The solution for me was to disable xcache for the php-cli php.ini and in overall compile xcache from source. that worked for me as the segfaults are gone. the reason why this happens on ezpublish is unknown. but this has happened for ezP 4.0.x and 4.1.x. i dont know if there are any issues using xcache/php5 and ezP 3.x.
