Validate user input

Hello!

What I want is to validate the user input: the server recieves the user input after the user sends the form, then the input from one particular field is checked <<some place>>, let's say that the second letter allways has to be 'F' and that the last character is a digit. If, and only if this is the case, an e-mail should be send to the user.

What I need to know is where <<some place>> is.

What is done by now is the look and needed fields for the desired feedback_form template, the user recieves an e-mail and default validation is included on top of the feedback_form (uri='design:content/collectedinfo_validation.tpl). But the e-mail should be sent only if the input was the 'right one'.

But where is it possible to add the desired code for the input validation? It cannot be an override of the collectedinfo_validation.tpl, since this happens after, when the 'input has failed/not allowd'.

Is it a PHP file that needs to be added some place?

Thanks for all suggestions.

The best way in my opinion would be to write a datatype extension in which you would extend one of the common datatypes, for example ezstring, and where you provide customized validation. This is mostly PHP work and to do that you have to know how to create your own datatype. This will be little work, though, as you will be extending an existing type, you will only need to provide a new unique name for it and new validation method. Naturally, it would be even better to create entirely new type.

If you make direct changes to the existing ezstring type, you will not be able to use that type anywhere else.

Here's some more hints:
