It should not resize it by default, the resizing only occurs when the image is used in a template. By default the image is resized to the size specified as "medium" in the image.ini and image.ini.append files. You can make it appear as you uploaded by specifying the template use the "original" size. I think this is the right syntax, but I am not sure.
