Link in XML content causes line breaks

This is a bit of a pain as it means that IE (in its wisdom) renders the output with an extra space. I have code that looks like this: <link href='/snip'>residence permit</link>. And output that looks like this: <a href="/snip">residence permit</a> .<br /> Giving hyperlink and text that looks like this residence permit . ----> any ideas would be most welcome. Or is this a bug, I couldn't find any references to this anywhere. Thanks in advance, Simon
