Hi, I heard about EZ working on a new templating system since many years. It was initially "promised" for the version 4.0. Then I understood that this new system will be based on EZ Components and will be released with the version 4.1... But in the last update of the roadmap, there is nothing more about this subject. Is it still in the 4.1 (maybe globally included under the "Overall Performance Improvement" feature of the 4.1 version) ? Or did I misundertand something or was it just a myth ?
Thank you, Hakim

There was talk about having it in 4.0, but that was in the "Telemark" 4.0, a total rewrite using eZ Components incl its template system. The 4.0 we have today is a port of the 3.x version to be able to move to php 5 without anymore upgrade work then a 3.x to 3.y version, and no content or code left behind(yes you have to update it for php 5, but that was inevitable). And even if it was talks about switching template system in 4.1, and we do have prototypes for converting old to new templates, its still quite a lot more work for a upgrade then any of the previous upgrades, so instead we're doing it step by step, switching parts, and with time writing a new kernel(scheduled for 4.5) next to the current one that only uses new parts like the template system and the mvc, this is what goes by the name Project V, as the system will end up to be version 5.0, at that point it should have completely taken over for the old kernel. So that would be our roadmap more or less, and more information about it will tickle out after 4.1 when we get to start on it.

One correction: the new kernel will gradually appear with 4.x after 4.1 final is out on March 17th 2009. So the notion of 4.5 is a bit artificial. We aim for re-establishing +- 6 monthly release cycles as well

Thank you for your answers. No need to say how frustrating it is to wait so long for a new version 4.1 which will at the end not bring so much new features... Hearing about version 4.5 or 5.0, when the v.4.2 is TBD is not very optimistic neither... I suspect that EZ may be somehow victim of its success : EZ ressources are mostly invested in services while there is maybe not enough left to keep EZ Publish product growing safely.
Cheers, Hakim

Well, when it is about new features: most are added through extensions, the kernel just gets the hooks for new functionality. An example is the search engine, which is basically taken out of the kernel (eZ Find is the recommended search engine to use btw). Some more are listed on the roadmap (which contains what certainly will make it in that release, not what will finally be in it)

Paul, I see a lot of time is being invested in these new extensions, but what of the replacement templating system and the improved caching that was mentioned some 14 months ago. At that point the roadmap also led us to believe MSSQL support for Summer of last year as well. Is an improved workflow system on the schedule anytime soon? Is the eZ focus still on enterprise clients? I find it concerning to see time being invested in developing a css editor, when in an enterprise environment most clients would have CSS gurus on staff. These types of features and functions whilst looking nice, provide very little value to partners and developers looking to extend and build on the eZ Publish base.

Dear Paul, Thank you for your answer. I understand that some new features are coming through the extension mechanisms, and I am wandering if these many extensions could not be somewhere a brake for improving the core - since all these extensions then need to be adapted which may be a huge work explaining (maybe partially) why these core improvements are delayed, and delayed ....
Just some thoughts... Hakim

> Is an improved workflow system on the schedule anytime soon? http://issues.ez.no/014481 Not a new workflow system, but some more operations/ triggers for the current one.
