image backup / which directories?

Hi,

I've started with ez 3.1 and have upgraded from time to time, so I am using now the new image system of ez 3.4. (which is - of course - the same as in 3.3).

I've several directories under my var/storage:

var/images
var/images-versioned
var/original
var/reference
var/variations

I don't want to make a backup of all directories but only from the "original" images.

So - which (main) directory is needed and which is not?

e.g. in var/original/image are the "old" original images from ez 3.2. Can I remove them savely?

(Because I am having around 4000 "original" images, I don't want to use the "try and error" principle) ...

Additional question:
Why are empty directories with no images created?

Kind regards,
Emil.

Best wishes,
Georg.

Hi Emil,
i just posted a bug regarding the "images-version" directory, because i think, there is some problem with the cleanup code.
I think, the dirs
var/original
var/reference
var/variations
are just used by the old image system (until 3.2). The new images system fetches the original files from "var/original", when it needs them. But i don't know, how you can make sure, that all images are converted to the new system, so you can safely delete the old dirs.
If you can afford it: rename these three dirs and see, what happens with your site ;)
Or crawl the site, so you can make sure, that you access all images, which will copy all images to the new image system's dir, so you can remove the three "old" dirs.
I'm very sure, that you do not need to backup the reference and variations directory: They are only needed by the old image system. And even there, they are created from the "original" files.

So, my suggestion:
crawl the site (use httrack or some other website mirror tool), then
rename/move the three "old" dirs:
var/original
var/reference
var/variations
and mirror the site again, checking for errors (maybe a link-checker will do).

Additional anwer:
I think, the empty directories exist, because, there WAS a file in it, but the file was removed and the dir was not removed.
Should happen, when you upload an image and preview it (in the "draft" state) and the publish it somewhere (when it gets a node).
