How to have filter(s) for a product category or folder?

Hi.

Newbie to this CMS.

When a visitor click on a menuitem that list products then I would like to be able to add some filter(s) on top of the page.

Let say my customer wanted to display clothing.....

Then they probably want filter for:

Color
Brand
Size

Is this possible in a standard installation?
If not, is there any extension that makes this possible?
If not.... any suggestion of books or online documents to read so I can create a solution for this!
