Dedicated Server

Recently, I read in this forum that if you want a fast eZ publish website, then you need to have your own dedicated server and run only eZ on it.
Now, what if I can't afford a dedicated website?
Will you say that eZ can't work fast on usual virtual servers?
Why isn't there a ready document which talks about this issue?
A week can hardly pass without one or two new threads in this forum from newbies complaining of the slow of eZ.
To speak for myself, I invested about 4 months learning and building a website in eZ, but eventually all optimizing tricks didn't work and it continues to be slow. Now it seems the only trick remains is using a dedicated server which I can't have.

First of all you'd have to define fast. And second, yes, ezpublish works best on a dedicated machine (that is true of any CMS).

But even on shared host, performance is acceptable GIVEN you use some PHP accelerator. Without, well, it's huge and the load on the server to parse PHP all the time is significant.
