I think eZ publish basics (EPB) is worth buying even if you have the Learning eZ publish 3 (LEP3) book. They cover many of the same topics, but EPB is very easy to use if you have a specific problem. It's easier to read and it is faster to look up on problems. I was so pleased with the book that I will give it to some of my most eager customers. I think LEP3 is stronger on system architecture, deploying and planning for larger sites. It also covers development of extensions. This is not so good covered in EPB.
