admin interface / content publishing very slow

Hi all,
forgive me if the answer to my problem is in the forums somewhere already. I haven't been able to find it if it is.

I have a rather fresh installation and have only recently begun adding content. At the moment the content consists entirely of instances of the folder class, basically just to sketch out a navigation structure. There are less than 300 nodes in place, and the deepest point in the tree is only 4 levels down. The host is a dual proc 1,5 Ghz with 2GB of RAM.
Publishing a new or edited content item (simple folder) has been taking increasingly longer, and now takes between 18 and 21 seconds to complete.

I cannot believe this is correct behavior, becuase at this rate it'll take several minutes to add an item soon.

What is going on, and how can I make it go away?
Can anybody help?

Yes, of course, sorry about that.

As I said, the hardware is rather tough enough, and bandwidth is massive. For right now, the machine doesn't do anything other than play secondary DNS for several unused domains. Basically idle, except the devel on the site I'm talking about.

If I'm reading things correctly, Memory usage is:
Free: 90.0 MBytes (100.0%)
Used: 8.7 KBytes (0.0%)

and the hit and miss details are:
Hits: 1 (0.0%)
Misses: 4935 (100.0%)

Looks ugly, huh?

Hi

Your APC does not seem to be working. If it was, it should have been using at least 30 MB for eZ publish.

I suggest you try to either reinstall it, or try another PHP accellerator.

Thanks for the tip. I admit I've never used APC before. My only experience with an accelerator has been with ioncube running on RedHat 7.3 (currently in full production, with an uptime over 600 days, by the way).
I only installed APC because it seems to be the one recommended by eZ staff. I'll see if I can find any obvious mistakes.

I've turned on debugging in the admin interface, and performed 3 simple tasks:
-- Logged in
-- selected 'edit' for a content item (simple folder at top of tree)
-- made a spelling change and selected 'send for publishing'
