XML entities

It gets decorated ( using htmlspecialchars() ) and stored in the database as &alpha; ... of course it's not displayed properly later.. I've tried xmlarea but it's code is mostly derived from ez kernel code for xml text and has the same problem.. Is this a problem with eZ or just me? :) Thanks!
