Similar templates overrides in multiple extensions

What does the order depend on ? Some order in the way extensions are loaded ? Is that already handled in existing extensions ?

For what I'm currently doing (simplified version of the admin interface for editors), I have to change design/admin/templates/content/edit.tpl But I have xmlarea installed, and it has an override for that file. What can I do ? Is there any way to have the same extension work in both cases (XML Area installed / not installed) ? Thanks in advance.
