How to give unique access to design folder

Until now it has been pretty straightforward, but a problem arises when i comes to the design folder. The owner of each site should of course be able to upload images, stylesheets and so on to their own image folder. But how can I restrict their access to just this one folder? I imagine that it's possible by setting up FTP accounts for each folder manually, but I'm thinking there might be an easier way. What are others in a hosted environment doing? Thanks in advance ! By using our web server controlpanel, this was a pretty straight-forward process.
