eztime datatype and daylight savings

I have a content class that uses the eztime datatype. Content was created when daylight savings was not in effect. The times entered were displayed as required.

Now that daylight savings is in effect the times have moved forward an
hour due to daylight savings. Unfortinually this is causing problems :(

It appears that there is timezone information being taken into account when the information is saved and/or retrieved (though context is not being stored - time zone / daylightsaving in effect?)

I don't understand why this is the case. Regardless of timezone 10am should be 10 am shouldn't it? So if the time entered is saved as the number of seconds since midnight then there would be no problems of this sort.

Is there any reason why this datatype was created this way?

This is using 3.4.4.

Cheers
Bruce
