Would it be possible to tweak the search results so the projects/contributions appear first, and the comments after (or not at all). It's a bit cumbersome wading through pages and pages of comments looking for the project.

You can often search faster using the in browser search plugins available, http://ezpedia.org/wiki/en/ez/opensearch#eztoc36541_1
You can always use another index to search more accurately which is what some of the plugins do themselves,http://google.com/search?q=brookins+consulting+site:ez.no/community/contribs
I think your idea has value as there are a growing number of comments per project/contributions which can make searching quickly more difficult.
I would recommend filling an ez.no enhancement request on http://issues.ez.no/
