Are you talking about these lines?
<link rel="Home" href="/" title="News Startseite" />
<link rel="Index" href="/" />
<link rel="Top" href="/" title="Latest news - News" />
<link rel="Search" href="/content/advancedsearch" title="Suche News" />
<link rel="Shortcut icon" href="/design/standard/images/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />
<link rel="Copyright" href="/ezinfo/copyright" />
<link rel="Author" href="/ezinfo/about" />
<link rel="Alternate" href="/layout/set/print/" media="print" title="Druckversion" />

I think, they are created in the link.tpl, which is included in the pagelayout.
They are for special Browsers, i.e. Opera, which interpret them and can -for example- show a browser-buttonr for "index", "print", "search", "Copyright" or whatever is defined.
