Weird PDF/File issue

hello all.
I am having a problem with a site that i'm working on, it's my first try with 3.5
I want to be able to upload PDF versions of press releases. I can upload them no problem, and i'd like to put them in the media library>files folder because that's the default folder for objects of this type
I gave anon users a new role to allow this access. but it doesn't work. I was going crazy and then I realized that the link works on SAFARI but the very same link gives me a Kernel access error #1 on Firefox.
Yes, I did delete the cache on firefox and cleared the cache on the site.
Any hints as to what i'm doing wrong?
