I'm using some features of 4.0 on a 3.9.4 site and want to upgrade the template_look class and its object. On the development machine I tried replacing the old template_look class with the new one. How do I now create an instance (object) of that class and have it appear properly in the design area? Thank you!

It would be a lot easier to 'upgrade' the current class you have, basically by adding / changing the needed attributes.
But if you enter '/setup' after your base admin url, you'll get access to create / copy / remove and so on.

Thank you! That's what I did for the staging server, but your reply helped me get the development server back on track. In case it's helpful to anyone in the future, the process was:
1. In the admin interface setup tab, view the template_look class (under the class group "setup"). 2. Be sure the "Class groups" button on top is depressed. 3. At the bottom of the page, add template_look to the Content class group so it will show up in the "Create here" drop down box in the next step. 4. Point the browser to the admin site with /design at the end. 5. "Create here" a template_look. 6. Remove "template_look" from the content class group (see 1-3 above).
