Open Office front end edit troubles

When I export from the front end edit link on the EZ toolbar the doc gets downloaded and opens with OO, I am presented with a OO ASCII filter screen. I have tried literally every setting on this and I am getting nothing but 20-30 pages of skewed characters, maybe only two lines per page. What am I missing here? DO I need something else installed for this to work?

Thanks!

Do you have openoffice installed on your server?

Thanks for your reply, Tony. Sorry for my late reply back :)

I do not know what you are referring to. What do I need to install on the server to make this work? Is there an extension that I am missing? I can't seem to find any documentation on getting this set right.

Thanks for taking the time to help!

The official name is openoffice.org, to emphasize its web presence and location.

Yes, you need to download and install it (about 90MB download, as I recall). It is roughly equivalent to, and can be made compatible with, MS Office -- and it's open and free.

Thanks Kim. I have open office and have used it for years. The way Tony put it with "Do you have it installed on your server" implied that there was something left that needed to be installed on the server or an extension or something.

If you read my first post you will see that OO is opening the file with the ASCII filter for importing the exported ezpublish and no matter what I choose I am getting pages upon pages of garbled characters.

Thanks for any input or solution to this.

Hi,

If you use an Open Document Text compliant application on the client side (best example is of course Open Office, a very used one is Neo Office on the mac platform), you should not need any installation on the server side.

Can you checkon our online demo (http://now.ezpublish.no/ login : editor password : publish). If this doesn't work, it will mean that there is something wrong on your client computer (old version of OOo ?), if this work, it will mean that there is something wrong in your eZ Publish installation ...

Cheers,

Thanks Roland for the reply. I did what you suggested and sure enough, it works fine and does not bring up the ASCII Filter in OO. Do you have any ideas of what may be wrong with the EZ install to make this happen? It's a pretty canned test install. Any ideas on what to try out to get this corrected?

Thanks!

Does anyone have any ideas on how to start to debug this and track the problem on this?

Thanks!

Hi R

I did what you suggested and sure enough,

What exactly did you do to fix your issue?

The issue is not with eZ Publish as it works as required in that it produces an Open Document Text and the appropriate headers that tell the browser how it should be opened.

The issue would appear on the client side in that you didn't have the appropriate software (recent version of OO) as Roland pointed out.

I'm not sure what it is that you hope to debug?

Hi Bruce,

I did as Roland suggested:

::Can you check on our online demo (http://now.ezpublish.no/ login : editor password : publish). If this doesn't work, it will mean that there is something wrong on your client computer (old version of OOo ?), if this works, it will mean that there is something wrong in your eZ Publish installation ...::

And the online demo works just fine with exporting EZ content to OO, which apparently means something is not fine with the my EZ installation in question. So what I am trying to determine is what could be wrong with my EZ installation that would make it generate the ASCII filter in OO to start off with. I have the latest canned version of EZ and the latest version of OO which is all I use for office and doc work anyway.

Is there any suggestions as to what may be wrong in the EZ installation? Where do I start with tracking down what the culprit may be.

Thanks for any insight you can convey!

Hi R

Can you give some details as to the version of eZ you are using & web server config. Are you able to save the file and try to open it in OO? Is the site accessable via the internet?

Cheers

Hi Bruce,

You bet.

Can you give some details as to the version of eZ you are using & web server config.

EZ version 3.92 Stock install
freeBSD 6
php 4.4
mysql 3.2
Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8

Are you able to save the file and try to open it in OO?

I have tried this initially, and I can save the file locally and open it, but I am prompted once again by the ASCII import filter in OO. Selecting any of the character encoding options results in the same 20+ pages with only 2-3 lines per page of garbled characters.

Is the site accessable via the internet?

Yes.
Test install with dummy content, on a sandbox.

Thanks for your help.

Hi R

Unfortinually I can't look at the exporting functionality without a login. I notice that the URL has the /index.php?/eng appended to it. I wonder if this has something to do with your issue?

Cheers
