Linking profile info to articles posted

Hi -
Here is my dilemma --
When my users register, they select which of 8 units they are associated with (and can select more than one). I need for the unit(s) that they selected to be stored with the articles that they enter, so that if someone wants to search for articles by everyone in 'unit x', the correct information will appear.
Can anyone point me in the right direction??? my head hurts........
