how to get parent_node_id of "main" object?

How do I get the parent_node_id of a main object?

I have an object defined that also has nodes in other locations. In the display template for this object type, I need to loop through the contents of the parent folder of where the object is stored, not of the node that it is being viewed from.

Help.
