Changing parts of the design at certain nodes

Hi there,

I'm trying to figure out best practice of changing one part of our general site design at certain nodes or node tree. Practically, the design is split to two parts in pagelayout.tpl - one for the requested module content and other for the navigation tree. Anyway, at our News section (a folder in content tree), I would like to have only three recent news article headlines to replace the navigation tree.

I would not like to write a completely new pagelayout.tpl for news section, but replace only one part of it. What would be the best way to do this?
