We are using ezp 4.2, as 4.4 is released, is it worth to upgrade from 4.2 to 4.4? is there any guide to upgrade ezp 4.2 to 4.4? we have developed some extensions and new templatesthanks

eZ Publish has excellent upgrade documentation available to help you through the upgrade path. I personally recommend upgrading to the latest 4.4 (Fuji) release.

is there any direct upgrade from 4.2 to 4.4? seems so many steps in 4.2 to 4.3 then 4.3 to 4.4

No. Sorry.
eZ Publish upgrades are incremental.
You will need to perform the upgrade steps to reach 4.4
