Trouble with Samba

I am running apache and EZ on a RH8 linux server, and am working with templates on WinXp with Textpad via Samba.

This works, but sometimes it seems like the Samba has left for vacation as it can take as much as 30 seconds to save a 3 kb text file, and more than a minute to create a folder. Other times, it runs smoothly.

Samba is configured excactly the same way as on another file server NOT running EzPublish. This has never caused any problems.
Could it be the complex and deep folder structure of EzPublish that messes up the Samba?

Any of you guys been into this kind of trouble? It's rather annoying, and if this keeps up, I'll have to retire with an ulcer within the next few years :)

other kinds of trouble; i don't think it has something to do with ezp, but with apps accessing files on a network share (or worse: a samba network share).

dreamweaver mx, for example, crashes viciously when it finds a .swf file (!) in any folder on a (samba) network share; winvcvs polls the network 10 times / sec for changes when it's working directory is on a (samba) network share, etc.

FWIW, i moved away again from using samba as a way to work on linux hosted files from a windows workstation directly. too much strange things happening.
