After the downloading and extracting the distribution 4.0.1 we called the index.php.
In the last version 4.0.0.rc1 we saw the full setup screen like an normal html page with normal html code init.

But now we looking only question marks.

What is missing or wrong?

Have an nice look at this (should be an setup screen of ez 4.0.1 stable version):

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????3???

We are using operating system named Fedora 8, php-xml was installed, (be carefull, ez 4.0.1 need additional this exernal library with DOMDocument init !).

The following error message (without php-xml) we were able to read:

Fatal error: eZ Publish did not finish its request
The execution of eZ Publish was abruptly ended, the debug output is present below.

But after installing the php-xml without errors in the error.log, we are able to see only question marks. There are NO entries in any error.logs for explaining this question marks.

What is happen? Who has an answer?

Exact same problem, I typed in the SMTP server name and clicked next, and everything broke as described.

Running OpenSuSE 10.1 and Apache2.

> rpm -qa | grep php
php5-ftp-5.1.2-27
php5-xmlrpc-5.1.2-27
php5-5.1.2-29.4
php5-zlib-5.1.2-27
php5-openssl-5.1.2-27
php5-dom-5.1.2-27
apache2-mod_php5-5.1.2-29.4
php5-mysql-5.1.2-27
php5-gd-5.1.2-29.22
php5-mbstring-5.1.2-27

Very little previous experience with PHP and never used eZ before so I'm 100% stuck :-|

Installation of 4.1 beta 1 shows same problem until ForceVirtual is changed to true.
But it stops on SMTP configuration step (selecting SMTP/MTA) with a "??????" page.
Installation tell me to set "AcceptPathInfo On" when it is already configured.
It has not be possible for me to complete the setup process.

Enviroment:
Centos 5
Apache 2.2
PHP Version 5.2.6

Be sure that all php extensions described here http://ez.no/doc/ez_publish/technical_manual/4_0/installation/normal_installation/requirements_for_doing_a_normal_installation#eztoc86403_2 are present

Unfortunately, I have mbstrings and it still doesn't work. In the process of trying to get things to work, I have tried compiling the newest PHP since according to the docs eZcomponents requires a newer version of PHP than is available for any Linux distro. Not only does it still not work, now no other PHP stuff works either. I'm currently installing a fresh web server, without PHP and without eZpublish.

recently we had this same issue with a ez 4.0.1 installation. problem came because charset selected for some templates. some of them was latin, some of the was utf-8. it doesn't work until we fixed that... so probably you can take a look to it.

1) Felix Gluecklich, could you please reedit your post and put your long question mark line into < code >???</ code >? So that it does not destroy the pagelayout.

2) On my checklist I would have the following:
- HTTP server forcing a non-utf8 encoding, overriding the HTML-layer charset declaration
- Making sure there's no automatic SQL connection encoding set

Also, since this is utf8 reality, mb_* function families are a must, otherwise you're bound to have some anomalies.

We want to test if this software is suitable for our association.

Ignazio + Martin: Please create new threads for new questions.

Martin: seems like you should re upload the software since you seem to have skipped some files.
