Searching eZ publish webhosting

My current host insists upon running PHP via CGI. As such, I am unable to use eZ Publish for my website.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a basic hosting solution that would support eZ Publish?

Hi David

Welcome to the eZ community!

Maybe you'll find some nice webhosting here: http://ez.no/partner/worldwide_ez_publish_partners/(profile)/hosting

Nice Alexandre! I agree. Webhosting for LAMP (linux, apche, mysql, php) should be cheap as it always has been, but to support the ez publish requirements..it's difficult to get a reasonable price as you say..

Maybe ez systems can comment this?! I also think it would be great that ez systems creates a page here where isp's can publish their offers, prices, and where we can add comments from experience.

I have the same problem. Can you say for certain that ez 3.8.1 wont work when php 4.4 has been installed in a cgi installation?

We were on a shared host for cheap, but they upgraded from 4.3 to 4.4 php and did not tell me, and it broke all of my sites.

After that, we switched to a dedicated server on which we host about 20 of our eZ sites.

I think that the reason that it is not a focus of eZ Systems to make eZ compatible with the inexpensive shared hosts is its positioning as an Enterprise Content Management system, rather than as a simple blogging tool or gallery system. Those types of systems are more end-user oriented, and eZ is more integrator focused. While this is a bit of a generalization, it has been our experience that most of our enterprise level clients have their own hosting facilities, servers, and IT staff, and the systems are built and configured to host eZ and not do anything else.

Ok, I understand. My host however says they can run php 4.4 over a cgi installation inaddition to the php already running on the dedicated box, which is high spec.

So I need to know if ez will work in this manner, yes or no? Has anyone tried this?

Hi,

It doesn't seems to work out of the box with cgi and that's not the mainstream config.

Moreover, ez is rather ressource intensive and needs special tuning to work well (accelerator, imagemagic, >8Mb of memory, cron, php cli...).

Bottom line: if you're not able to install software and tune them how you want, you're going to spend quite a few time trying to tweek in the dark.

A dedicated server is the solution I'd recommend, but you can host several websites on one host.

I am working on an eZ site for a non-profit organisation with almost no budget. After trying out many hosting providers, we have chosen http://WestHost.com/ who offer VPS accounts for a very sharp price.

An idea for eZ systems is that they start a service which offers hosting..guess they can afford making a automatic system here where they can earn some more money ;) ..and then we all have a good, fast, tuned solution from the creator.. for ez p hosting.

Please give me credit for this very magical and fantastic idea :p

I got a VPS account (128MB ram) from JaguarPC for my other sites. and I'm now testing eZ Publish on it. I found it doesn't run fast, I guess it must be very hungry for hardware resources, but am unsure.

Yes, it takes a lot of resources and is not so very fast unless your hardware is great! But, you can tune it, and use templatecaching..it's btw. a must..and also to use a php accellerator to improve performance.

Hi there,
I usually don't like shared hostings, but I had to move my website from a powerful VPS to one of them, which actually was my domain reg mantainer. I'm really satisfied with the results! The website runs like a breeze and the ezpublish finetune was perfect. www.xcalibre.co.uk
They have servers with php 4.4.x on it, just ask them at the moment of purchase to have your account set up on those servers. It's also very cheap.
Cheers

This is an interesting topic, and it's nice to see friends participating.

We tried running eZ on VPS environments without much success.

This is the tricky part:

While most VPS providers guarantee memory and CPU, the bottleneck comes with disk I/O. If you are lucky you'll be in an uncrowded VPS, but as the server gets more users, things will become slower, and slower.

The above situation is made even worse by the fact that eZ relies on caching output to files in the filesystem, therefore relying on a fast hard disk for reads and writes.

In our experience, the simplest dedicated server can compete with higher priced VPS plans.

It's painful to take the plunge to a manage dedicated, but it is worth it if you have a few sites.

I am unsure about how many hosting partners there are, but WebDeal (http://www.webdeal.com) comes to mind as a reliable provider.

Good luck!

Like Felipe,

We are managing some ez publish sites with great performance in some low cost dedicated servers in Germany, with similar prices to a VPS, but their support is having some problems in the last months, so I will not post their name at this time...

It's true the big problem is to manage the servers... but the control and performance are worth the extra time...

We had also good experience with http://www.liquidweb.com/ dedicated servers. Anyway hosting experience are always a particular experience... ;)
