My ISP gives me access to a shared Linux box via Cpanel. All the technology stack prerequisites are met. Unfortunately, as soon as I start reading install documentation, it says "Login as Root", the ONE thing I cannot do on my server. Shell access yes, root login no.
My specific questions:
1. Can I still install ezPublish? Versions matter?
2. If yes, any special instructions in order to do so?
Any known pitfalls?
3. Will ANYTHING change on a copy of ezP installed that way? 4. Considering that I am a very common case as potential ezP user, any reason why I couldn't find this situation specifically addressed in any posting/doc? Is it that I searched wrong? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I'd like to install ezP right away...
Cheers CK

Some answers to your questions: 1) You certainly can install eZ3.2 on a shared hosting account, as I have done it myself. I don't know about version 3.3 as I haven't upgraded yet, but it should be the same.
2) When I installed it (manually), it was quite simple to do as long as you follow the instructions in the documentation and I found the following article at Sitepoint.com extremely useful -
http://www.sitepoint.com/article/1208
With regards to pitfalls - most servers are different so if possible I would get your host support AIM/MSN ready and at hand - they will probably know any cause for errors. The only problem I had was that my host runs PHP as a CGI module which eZ3 doesn't support directly. If you have the same problem (it gives an "Internal Server Error 500" when you click on any link although the homepage looks fine), then you just need to install the php-cgi fix for eZ3 available here: http://ez.no/developer/ez_publish_3/forum/install_configuration/my_final_patch_for_phpcgi
Without root access (although some shared hosts do let you have this) you can't run modfix.sh which sets all permissions correctly and clears the cache. So instead you will have to do this manually from the File Manager in Cpanel or some FTP software. Just follow these instructions: http://ez.no/developer/ez_publish_3/documentation/configuration/configuration/tips_tricks/manual_modfix
3) Unless you have PHP as a CGI then everything will work exactly as having eZ3 installed by root access. If you have the php-cgi fix installed then all will work (as far as I've found - ie. up to version 3.2-1) the same, although the internal links will look like www.domain.com/index.php?/content/11 rather than www.domain.com/index.php/content/11 - not much of a difference! It is also possible with a dedicated server (with virtual hosts) to make the links www.domain.com/content/11 although this is quite difficult to do anyway, and is not a great improvement. 4. It is quite common to be on shared hosting with eZ3, but most things are the same or similar to install. It would be useful for something to be added to the docs though. ;) Hope that clears up some of your problems, Cheers Tim

Tim, thanks a lot for a thorough, complete and precise response! I am in the process of installing right now, and you'll probably hear from me one way or anoher :) Another question: Assuming that ezP is all that is contained in my virtual host directory (i.e., public_html), is there a particular reason to create yet another directory **inside** it to contain all files in the ezP distribution, or could I just place all those files in the public_html directory **without** an intermediary container? Wouldn't that simplify the URL's?
Cheers ck

I've got mine installed straight to my public_html folder and all works fine :) and yes it would simplify the URL - always a good thing. Good luck Cheers Tim

Tim, thanks again for your solidarity and dedication... What can I say, the installation went so smooth that I installed the system again in two other domains I host in the same ISP! :) I am starting now to dabble with the sites, looking at understanding the logic behind the system, directory structure, and such... All fun stuff! I will come back when I am done with one or two of the sites to "invite" everybody to check them out! By the way, if you know of any knowledge resources available outside of the ez.no site (has critical mass been reached already to make a small market for a book?) it would be great to know. Cheers, and many thanks again ck

What hosting company ?
I use jtlnet with cpanel and ssh access, I've been trying to use ezpub there but have continuly run in to config/power issues. I get Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded ...ezcodepage.php on line 835. The install works fine, I can once in a while get a page to appear.. I'm really interested in getting this working. Any advice in where to have my site hosted where expub works in a shared hosting env. or settings that will allow ezpub to run at my current site ?
I believe that the php memory limit is set to 8M and the hosting provider is unwilling to change to 12M. Seems they have Zend optimizer running.
Thanks Derek

I have got mine hosted at DR2.net - http://www.dr2.net and they seem to be really good - cheap, fast and helpful - they only guarantee 99.5% uptime (I think), but I've had better than 99.99% since I've been with them (about 6 months).
My site isn't live yet though - but if anyone wants to check it out http://amelody.dr2.net Cheers Tim

I have used HostGo (http://www.hostgo.com) for several domains and several years. The usual Cpanel, Perl, PHP, Apache, MySql, Postgres, etc. The thing that has kept me hooked to them is great support (e.g., things like raising the memory for the install of ezP took all of two minutes via email). Availability is the usual, with some spotty moments, and I haven't had enough experience with intense serving to testify for that. Then again, for $10 a month you can start (and get 300 Mb, 100 email addresses, etc.) and keep adding bandwidth and resources as you go forward... Documentation could be better, but they make it up with good support.
Cheers ck

Hi,
Does anybody know where the link to this doc went? http://ez.no/developer/ez_publish_3/forum/install_configuration/my_final_patch_for_phpcgi It just gives a @Module not found' error now.
Thanks, Mark
