I am trying to setup ezpublish on localhost. when i get to the database initialisation stage i get an error:

"The database would not accept the connection, please review your settings and try again."

I am using PHP 4.4.4, MySQL 5.0, Apache 1.3.34

The logins for the database are correct but i don't understand and can't figure out why i can't connect...?

Are you sure your database is running?

Have you checked your settings?
Database configuration can be set in files site.ini* (site.ini.append.php for instance):

/settings/siteaccess/*/site.ini*
/settings/override/site.ini*

Are you using a kickstart.ini file?

I would recommend to enable debug output during installation process. It gives more detailed information what is wrong.

You can do it in settings/override/site.ini.append.php (If file does not exists, create it.)

[DebugSettings]
DebugOutput=enabled
