U.S. Servers? Why does my site run so slow?

My site is super slow, I was told it might be the server not being too compatible with the system Any recommended Hosting companies in the U.S.?

Also I would love any other suggestions as to what could be causing the problem.

Also I wanted to add that whenever I try and clear all caches, i get this error:

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, support@supportwebsite.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Hi Kevin

You use PHP 4.3.11 with eZ 3.7.5, although eZ 3.7.x should be used with PHP 4.4. So this might cause the problems with the cache clearing.

For the rest see my email

Someone made this site for me then bailed, so I don't know whats up with this thing.

How do I upgrade the PHP? My hosting company supports all the way up to 5.0.

Kevin,

I don't think eZ can run under PHP 5.0.

There are alot ways to speed the site up, but if it isn't running correctly, I would begin by verifying the server configuration meets the eZ requirements posted on this site.

Next, you may want to consider a PHP accelerator and finally, tune eZ.

Good luck,

Betsy

Hi,

They are plenty of ways to tune an easy install thing. However, puting a version not compatible with the PHP version is not a good sign that the guy that did it puts a lot of attention to details.

I'd suggest to spend a few hours with someone that knows ez to have a health check of your install.

Hint: betsy is a us ez partner...

Ok thanks so much guys, I have a few things I still need some clarification on:

1. First of all I checked that link and for my version of of EZ (3.7), it says it won't work with 5.0 but that it works with PHP 4.4.0. Of course my hosting company is being total assholes and refuse to up from php 4.3. So my options with the hosting company is to go to PHP 5 or stay at 4.3. Since EZ publish doesn't support 5, what the heck should i do?

2. I would love it if a partner or anyone savy could do a health check for me. My budget is pretty much nonexistent, but if anyone has even a few minutes to see what they can, please e-mail me at ktcompton@gmail.com.

3. I was told by Caudia that my system is running in CGI mode. Is that on the server end or is it something my bonehead programmer did? If its my end, how do I change this?

4. My site has sped up quite a bit, partially because Paul helped me a bit and also because (thanks to Claudia's suggestion) I asked my host to figure out why my DB kept dying. The escalated it and it seems to be running the queries fine and navigates much faster on the front end. I know it shouldn't be working so well since the php versions are conflicting, but what specific symptoms would this cause.

As I see it you have 3 options
1) stick with your current provider and run eZ Publish 3.6 (the last release to run on php4.3)
2) run the community php5 port (not sure how robust this is) see: http://ez.no/community/forum/developer/ez_publish_3_x_on_php_5
3) change providers

Thanks Bruce! As it is now its actually working a lot faster so I'm going to get everything else working good then see how it is.

I think a good next step for me is this CGI mode business... any thought?

Hi Kevin

There is nothing you can do about this as this is set by your provider. Afaik it is not possible to run more than one PHP module on Apache, so if a provider offers several versions of PHP on the same server, the most used one (most likely PHP5) will run as module and the others as CGI.

Don't worry to much about it. Sometimes using PHP in CGI mode can cause problems with the searchengine, but this does not seem to be the case for you. I read somewhere in the forums that eZ is a tad slower when using CGI but I haven't read any figures on how much this affects the speed. I doubt that it is worth changing to another provider.

Good luck

Hi,

I'm afraid running it on php4.3 will brings you to various semi random problems (when you try to edit a complex thing, when this and that). You'll have a working system, but not a reliable one.

On Bruce list, I'd add
4) being so pissed off by the heratic problem that you build a new site
5) drink too much to forget.

Both of these options aren't that great sounding, are they ?

In short: reconsider the migration/update process. That's going to be painful otherwise

Good luck, no matter what you choose
