EZ or Mambo - No flames

Hi,

I'm currently setting up my first CMS website and, having looked through the various packages, I've narrowed down my choice to EZP and Mambo.

I've downloaded both and installed them, played around with them and on the odd occasion I've broken them. EZP is a fantastic product and I would really like it to be part of the future of my site but, at the moment, it also has it's problems.

I've looked through the forum of the EZ.NO website (I can't find any other EZP forums on the net) and noticed that many questions can take days, weeks and even months to get a reply. Despite having nearly one million downloads, it doesn't appear as though the EZ community is very large or very active, and so this is where Mambo comes in. Several forums are available for Mambo that show very regular posts, the software is easy to use and Mambo is getting many new features in the new 4.6 version. It is obviously a better product than the ...nuke apps but probably not in the same league as EZP.

As I'm new to CMS I think that it would be a good start to use Mambo so that I can have a more trouble-free intro to building my sites but I would like to keep working on EZP with a view to using it later on.

I hope that the EZ publish community grows to support this great app and I'll be more than happy to help out where I can. In the past, I've produced video tutorials for some of the major 3D apps, like Softimage XSI, and I'll be more than happy to produce the same sort of videos for EZP, if this sort of thing would be of use. I'll also be happy to setup a forum and website etc, if it will help the EZ community to develop.

Until then, does anyone have any experience of using both Mambo an EZP? If I start my site with Mambo, is it easy enough to move the site and all it's content over to EZP at a later date?

Hi,

I've also looked at Mambo and Ez - to answer your question, no - I dont think its possible (certainly its not easy) to port data between the two cms's.

Essentially, Mambo provides a very quick site build out, you can add modules/components very quickly - but your locked into a system that isnt very easy to customise. When you look at Mambo gen'd sites, they often tend to look the same (as everyone installs every available add-on) though this is more a designer issue, not a cms one.

With Ez you have an initial steep learning curve, sites take a bit longer to rollout, but the ability to customise is pretty well unlimited.

Regards, Steve.

I used Mambo and phpWebSite when I started playing with CMS. Quite true they are easy to install and it doesn't take time to have a site up and running. Customization of the layout templates is pretty easy as well. But it terms of data entry, it might be more difficult as you have to play with the php codes and sql queries within the core or components.

What makes me switch to ezPublish is its ability to easily manage images, data entry customization and multilanguage functionality. It does take some time to learn ezp, but it's worth it.
