Search engine crashes server

Hi,

we have a site whose db has grown up a lot (1,8GB). Besides the size, the site has a lot of traffic.

We are using google as search engine for this site, because if we use ezsearchengine plugin/class, server load begins to rise and may hang up. I believe that this happens because of the ez policy of creating temporary tables for each word, or something like that.

db is mysql, and the servers are in an apache cluster.

I wonder if there is any possibility of using another search engine (and which one), or, if not possible, how should ezsearchengine class or site config be improved in order to make the search process "lighter" for the server(s).

Thanks in advance,

JP,
may the source be with you.

Apache Lucene is quite decent, but not always useable out of the box. Also, it's a Java app and that might or might now work for you. mnogosearch is said to be decent, too.
