How to tell between an object that lives in a tree, and one that's been linked using "other location"

Sorry for the long, possibly unclear title, but:

I'm trying to have 2 sets of nav elements - one for all the "native" articles that belong to parent, and another set where the articles have been added using the "other location".

So far, the only difference I can see between the two is that native articles will have node_id = main_node_id and the "other location" article won't.

If that's the only way to tell the two apart, is there a way I can incorporate that into a fetch?
