Have tried the documentation, but most entries about pdf are deprecated....
I want to extract a large number of news and events from our system, convert the to pdf and place them in an archive in another system. How do I do that?

That's true, pdf template function are deprecated.
You could create pdf quickly via paradoxpdf extension : http://projects.ez.no/paradoxpdf
