When travelling past the Macdonnell ranges west of Alice Springs, clear, flat scrubby plains go for miles until canyons appear to the opening of Areyonga. The town is nestled in a picturesque valley flanked by 300 metre high ranges, with ghost gums dotted through out the creek beds.

Areyonga's community of just 215 people has worked over recent years, in spite of temperature extremes, limited resources and few funds, they have proved what can be achieved through community determination.

When your community is located hundreds of kilometres from the nearest population centre there is often little point in relying on services from elsewhere to achieve improvement. With this in mind Areyonga has chosen to employ their own people rather than engage outside contractors for community projects.

The community of Areyonga is a "dry" area. No alcohol allowed.
