Groote Island (island) is Dutch for Great Island. It is a beautiful place just off the Australian mainland. The region is famous for the manganese mining which is conducted on the island.

The main languages that are spoken in the community are Anindilyakwa and English.

Their are approximately eight hundred and fifty people living around the Angurugu community. The Angurugu Community Government Council is dedicated to offering the best services to the community.
